Print sizes and cropping, without surprises.

You choose a frame you love on screen, order an 8x10, and the print arrives with the top of your head gone and your collar cut off at the bottom. Nothing went wrong at the lab. The picture and the paper are simply different shapes, and something had to give.

The Short Answer

Every photograph has an aspect ratio, the proportion of its long side to its short side, and every print size has one too. When the two do not match, the printer removes whatever will not fit. A standard camera frame is 3:2, so it prints edge to edge at 4x6, 8x12, 12x18 and 20x30, losing nothing.

An 8x10 is 5:4, a squarer shape, so turning a 3:2 frame into one costs about a sixth of its length. That sixth has to come from somewhere. Decide where, instead of letting an ordering screen decide for you, and the surprise disappears.

Aspect ratio is the whole story.

Aspect ratio is proportion with the inches left out: the long side divided by the short side. A 4x6 and a 20x30 are the same shape, 3:2, which is why one file fills both without a pixel being discarded. An 8x10 and a 16x20 are also the same shape as each other, and a different shape from the first pair. Size and shape are two decisions, and only one of them can crop you.

You will see the same size written both ways round: an 8x10 is 5:4 if you lead with the long side and 4:5 if you lead with the short one. One shape, described from two directions, cropping identically either way.

Most cameras used for portraiture produce a 3:2 frame, so that is the native shape of the picture. Stood on its end, it is a tall, narrow rectangle. Almost every popular print size is squarer than that, which means the long dimension is where the loss lands:

  • 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, all 3:2. The full frame prints. Nothing is removed at all.
  • 5x7, which is 7:5. A shade squarer, so a thin slice comes off each end of the length. Almost always invisible.
  • 8x10 and 16x20, both 5:4. About a sixth of the length disappears. This is where heads get cut.
  • 11x14, slightly less brutal than the 8x10 but in the same territory. Assume a sixth and you will not be caught out.
  • A square, 1:1. A full third of the length is gone. A square has to be composed for, not cropped into afterward.
  • Wide shapes like 16:9, used for banners. These are wider than 3:2, so the crop comes off the short side, which on an upright portrait means the outsides of your shoulders.

Nothing on that list is a defect. It is arithmetic. The trouble only starts when nobody does it before the order goes in.

Why the standard sizes are these shapes.

The sizes were never designed to agree with each other. They are leftovers from different eras of film, and the frames followed the film rather than the camera.

The 4x6 is the shape of a 35mm negative, which is where 3:2 comes from and why that ratio still governs most cameras. The 8x10, the 5x7 and the 11x14 come from sheet film, cut for large cameras that made a negative the size of the finished print. Those sheets were squarer, so the frames built for them were squarer, and the frame aisle has never changed its mind.

So the mismatch is structural. A modern camera makes one shape and the shelf sells another, and the crop is the toll you pay to move between them. Once you see that, an 8x10 stops being the default and becomes one option among several, most of which cost you nothing. A frame chosen for a wall also gets composed tighter and looked at longer than one you scrolled past, which is part of what makes a photo look expensive rather than merely correct.

Where the missing sixth comes from.

A lab does not know where your face is. Left alone, an ordering system crops from the center: half the loss off the top, half off the bottom. On an upright head and shoulders frame, the top half takes the space above your hair and then your hair, and the bottom half takes your collar.

Two small losses at opposite ends add up to one large mistake. Take the breathing room off the top and the head reads as sitting too high, which is the commonest reason a printed portrait looks wrong without anyone being able to say why. Take the collar off the bottom and it stops being a portrait and starts being a passport photo.

There is a five second test before you order anything. Open the picture on a screen, put a finger over the top and one over the bottom, and pinch in until what is left is the shape you are about to buy. Whatever your fingers cover is what the lab will remove.

Order the crop, not just the size.

The sequence that avoids all of this is short. Pick the size you want. Look up its ratio. Decide, deliberately, which part of the full frame you are giving up. Then send the lab a file already cropped to that ratio, rather than handing over the original and hoping.

Deciding it yourself usually means taking the loss from one end rather than splitting it. On most upright portraits, take more from the bottom than the top, because the space above the head is doing compositional work and the chest usually is not. On a wider frame with a lot of background the answer flips, which is exactly why a default cannot get it right.

A crop is not without cost. It throws pixels away, so a hard crop from a small copy comes out soft on paper even though it looked fine on a phone. Check the numbers first in my note on the resolution you need.

One rule with no exceptions: crop from the original, never from a copy that has travelled through a feed or a message thread. Those are re-compressed and shrunk on the way through, and the damage is invisible on a screen and obvious at 16x20. What to keep and where is in my guide on not losing your photos.

The edges you never see.

Even once the ratio is right, the print you get is not quite the print you see. Three things quietly eat the outer edge.

  • A mat overlaps the print so that it has something to grip, usually by around a quarter of an inch on every side. A 16x20 sheet behind a mat shows less than 16x20, and a face composed close to the top edge can end up tucked under the board.
  • A gallery wrap folds the image around the sides of the stretcher, so an inch and a half or more on every edge turns the corner and is never seen. Either compose loose or ask for a mirrored wrap, which reflects the edge outward instead of feeding your shoulder around the side.
  • Borderless printing trims the sheet after it is printed, and a trim has a tolerance. Anything critical sitting within a few millimeters of the edge is at the mercy of a blade.

One more trap in the frame aisle: the number on the box is sometimes the opening and sometimes the outside of the frame, and it is not always labelled. Measure the opening before you order paper. Which surface you print on changes how much all of this matters, and that argument lives on its own page: canvas, metal or paper.

Composing for a crop you already know.

The simplest fix happens before the camera comes up. If you know a picture is going to be a square, or a header banner, or an 8x10 above a desk, say it while we plan your looks. A frame shot deliberately loose survives being cropped three ways. A frame shot tight survives exactly one, and space around a subject is almost costless at the moment of shooting and impossible to invent afterward.

Profile pictures are their own version of this. A site crops your picture into a circle or a square by itself and does not ask, so the composition has to hold up with the corners removed and the outsides of the shoulders gone. That is a different job from a wall print, and one of the things a professional headshots session should be planned around rather than discovered afterward. For a print of any real size, shape and size have to be answered together, because the wall has an opinion about both. That method lives on the wall art sizing page. And if the picture is going to hang as a piece rather than as a record, the crop becomes part of the work rather than a step in ordering it, which is what people usually mean by fine art photography.

The checklist for the actual order.

Print this bit out, or keep it open in a tab while you order. It is short on purpose.

  • Write down the ratio of the size you are buying, not just the inches. 3:2 costs you nothing. 5:4 costs a sixth. 1:1 costs a third.
  • Crop the file yourself, working from the full original rather than from a resized copy.
  • Check whether the number on the frame is the opening or the outer dimension, and measure if it does not say.
  • Add the mat overlap if there is a mat, and the wrap allowance if it is going on canvas.
  • Compare the long edge in pixels against the long edge in inches. Three hundred dots to the inch is the convention every lab is quietly assuming.
  • Send the file in the color space the lab asks for, and expect paper to sit a little darker and less vivid than a bright screen. That gap has a physical cause, explained in my note on sRGB and CMYK.
  • Order one small test at the exact crop before committing to anything large.
  • Keep the uncropped master untouched. Every future size starts from it, and a crop cannot be undone once it is the only copy you have.

None of that requires software or expertise. It requires knowing the shape before you press the button, which is the only thing standing between a good frame and a print you quietly stop looking at. What gets made from a session depends on the picture, which is why the investment page sends that part to a call.

Why did my 8x10 cut off the top of my head?
Because an 8x10 is a squarer shape than the frame the camera made, and something had to go to fit. Unless you said otherwise, the lab took roughly half the difference off the top and half off the bottom. Nobody did anything wrong. Prevent it by cropping the file to 5:4 yourself before you order, deciding which end gives way.
Can I print the whole picture without cropping anything?
Yes. Most labs offer printing to fill, which crops, and printing to fit, which shrinks the whole image inside the sheet and leaves a blank border on two sides. Printing to fit keeps every part of the picture. The border is uneven, but behind a mat that is invisible, and it beats losing a crop you never chose.
Which sizes crop the least?
Anything in 3:2 crops nothing: 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30. If you want the whole frame exactly as composed, buy one of those and have a frame cut to fit, rather than buying a stock frame and cropping the picture to suit it. Framing to the print, rather than cropping the print to the frame, is what keeps every edge.
Does cropping make the print worse?
Cropping removes pixels, and a print needs a certain number of them across its long edge to look crisp at arm's length. A gentle crop on a full sized file is harmless. A hard crop on a small copy, printed large, goes soft in exactly the fine detail that matters, like hair and eyelashes.
Should I order the same picture at two different sizes?
Often, yes, and the mistake is sending the same crop to both. A picture that works at 5x7 on a shelf is usually composed tighter than the same picture at 20x30 on a wall, because you stand further back from the large one. Crop each size on its own terms, from the same master.
How do I know what size to order for a wall?
That is a different question from cropping, and it has a real method: measure the wall, take a fraction of it, work back to a size, then check it against how far away you stand. Almost everybody guesses low. I keep the full method on its own page rather than compressing it into a paragraph here.
